Dora, 43, attended the WE Connect Resource Fair in Fresno to utilize free medical services and to see if her husband qualified for low-cost health care insurance. Her husband, who suffers with diabetes and high blood pressure, is a legal immigrant from Mexico and was laid off from his job as a lead car repair technician. He hasn’t had health coverage for a couple of years. The main reason, she says, they waited so long to look into enrollment was because they were worried about the enrollment affecting his permanent residency application. An additional concern was the high cost of insurance. “No low-cost health care coverage is reasonable enough when you hardly have enough money to support your family as it is,” Dora said. The couple has five kids together, ranging in age from 5 to 26 years old. One of the most important things Dora learned at the WE Connect Resource Fair in Fresno was discovering her two eldest children now qualify for health care coverage under her insurance plan as a result of the new provisions in the Affordable Care Act. “I am so excited about this new law. My kids need health care insurance so badly. I can’t wait to get them enrolled,” Dora said. Join Dora and her family by learning about health care opportunities available to you thanks to the Affordable Care Act including the Low-Income Health Program, young adults covered by parent’s insurance until age 26, and more!
